From Faces to Feasts: Expanding from Portrait to Food Photography

For years, I’ve been focused on photographing people—their personalities, their quirks, and those fleeting moments that show who they are and what they are up to. Portrait photography has always been my bread and butter (pun very much intended). Recently, though, I’ve added a new flavor to my work: food photography. Don’t worry—this isn’t a switch; it’s more like adding a side dish to an already satisfying main course.
Ok now that I’ve exhausted my puns for the next year or so, we can move on. Here are some of the exciting new places I got to photograph in Toronto in the last few months!
Ramona’s, a cocktail and snack bar on Queen West
My personal highlight: First time ever eating crickets! Loved trying the cricket topped guacamole dip and tortilla chips!
Le Petit Pain, a French bakery in Forest Hill
My personal highlight: Other than the incredibly tasty pain au chocolat, I loved witnessing owner Ryan Silverstein’s warm connection with each and every single person coming into the bakery.
General Public on Geary
My personal highlight: The space itself! General Public is one of the most beautiful restaurants I’ve been to in recent years. Every single inch is thoughtfully designed and unique in its own way. Seems like everywhere you look there’s a detail that makes you feel something. As an 80’s kid, the nostalgic upstairs hits the hardest!
Linny’s, a deli-inspired steakhouse on Ossington
My personal highlight: Hearing about how restaurants come to be, and the inspiration behind the concepts is so fascinating to me. David Schwartz’s personal background is felt in Linny’s menu and all over the dining experience from the moment you set foot in the space. As David said himself “an ode to Bubbie’s basement”.
Aloette Bay
My personal highlight: Hands down the burger! Truly to be expected coming from me but the burger at Aloette Bay was out of this world. A must try!
Civil Works, a gorgeous cocktail bar inside Waterworks Food Hall
My personal highlight: The views! Civil Works overlooks Waterworks Food Hall so you can get such a great perspective of the culinary hustle and bustle underneath you.
Grape Witches at Waterworks, a European-inspired wine bar and bottle shop
My personal highlight: Secretly, the fact that it was all the way across from Civil Works on the other end of Waterworks Food Hall. Now all I have left is to shoot all the places in between! Jokes aside, if you’re a wine lover, Grape Witches is absolutely gorgeous. So excited for their patio opening next summer!
